Mr. Niemand joined Van Tilburg, Banvard & Soderbergh, AIA in 1998 and brings to our team more than 20 years of professional architectural experience.

Mr. Niemand has successfully completed a wide range of projects ranging from single family production homes and small lot developments to high density mixed-use urban infill projects and senior housing. He directs all aspects of project design, from planning and entitlements to design development, consultant coordination, agency approval, and general quality control for construction documents and construction administration. He prides himself on his collaborative nature with clients, consultants and colleagues for the benefit of each project.

Steve Gardner is a Senior Associate and Project Manager with Van Tilburg, Banvard & Soderbergh, AIA. As a director of the Denver office Mr. Gardner also assumes responsibility for overseeing day-to-day productivity, client relations, staffing and budgeting. His project management responsibilities include construction document production, contract negotiation, design, CAD standard implementation and close-out.

Steve has a proven track record of critical thinking, analysis, decision making and leadership abilities. His work includes commercial, institutional, residential, entertainment, mixed-use, hospitality and retail projects. With over 26 years of experience in all phases of the practice, he is well-versed in entitlements, masterplanning, feasibility studies, code research, design, specification writing, construction administration, program management and technical quality control. He is dedicated to working collaboratively with clients, colleagues, consultants and contractors to provide superior service and design excellence within scope, budget and schedule.

Erik Hall joined Van Tilburg, Banvard & Soderbergh, AIA in 1998 as an Architectural Intern with an emphasis in design and Architectural Rendering. He has grown to be a leader in the Denver office design and production services. With his professional emphasis on design, he plays a pivotal role in the concept and schematic development of Denver office projects. Erik also functions as a Project Manager, simultaneously overseeing several projects through Design Development, Construction and Construction Administration phases. He is adept at design detailing and well versed in the technical aspects of Type V construction. His versatility and ability in varied roles demonstrate comprehensive knowledge, skill and experience of the entire architectural process.

Mr. Yee graduated from the University of California at Berkeley, College of Environmental Design in 1977 with a Bachelor of Arts in Architecture. Mr. Yee brings his extensive experience to the full spectrum of architectural design services from initial concept design and governmental entitlements to construction documents and construction administration.

A veteran of the Northern California architectural community, Mr. Yee has worked with a wide range of client bodies, including private developers and non-profits, as well as local governments and redevelopment agencies in securing entitlements and realizing projects throughout the Bay Area. His expertise ranges from single-family production homes to high-density urban mixed-use developments. He is well versed in the design of affordable family and senior housing, market-rate multi-family apartments and for-sale condominiums. He joined Van Tilburg, Banvard & Soderbergh, AIA in 2005 and is the Director in charge of our San Jose Office.

Mr. Wolf joined the firm Johannes Van Tilburg & Partners, AIA in 1983 and was named an Associate in 1984. He is a licensed architect in the State of California with more than 30 years of professional planning and project management experience, including from 1988 to 1991 as a development manager for The Chandler Group, a L.A. Times “Top-25” builder specializing in Class A office and luxury apartment construction. During his private practice from 1992 to 1997 he specialized in commercial and income property design.

Mr. Wolf is responsible for the overall execution of the project through completion. His charge includes client liaison, zoning and building code research and entitlements, engineering coordination and analysis of alternative building systems, supervision of design and production personnel with an emphasis on communicating the intent of the design team in the finished product. Mr. Wolf’s experience includes residential planned communities, transit-oriented development, Class A office, institutional work, hi-rise and mid-rise adaptive re-use projects, and major urban mixed-use developments.

Mr. Petraglia joined the firm in 1990 and brings to our team twenty-two years of professional architectural experience. As a Senior Designer and Senior Project Manager, Mr. Petraglia develops all architectural aspects of his projects from conceptual design to the completion of construction. He also leads the design efforts within the firms’ Interior Design Division maintaining continuity between Architectural and Interior Design.

Mr. Petraglia is an expert in the restoration, renovation, adaptive re-use and tenant improvement of existing properties. His extensive design skills and emphasis on details are an asset to our firm’s design efforts.

Mr. DiBiase joined the firm in 1997 and is a licensed architect in the State of California. He is a LEED Accredited Professional, bringing to our team more than 30 years of experience in the planning and management of projects.

As Partner and Senior Project Manager, Mr. DiBiase has taken the lead in the firm’s ability to stay in the forefront of planning and design of senior housing and continuing care retirement communities. Although Mr. DiBiase has a particular concentration in Retirement Communities and a background in Acute Care Hospitals, his experience is broad and covers many building types. He practices a “hands-on” approach in the programming, planning, documentation, and management of projects.

Staying active in community affairs and plan review boards affords Mr. DiBiase an ongoing working knowledge of community concerns and planning issues.

Mr. Soderbergh is a founding Principal of the firm. Mr. Soderbergh has demonstrated leadership, and resourcefulness in the efficient and cost effective development and delivery of projects. He is currently involved in the planning, design, and entitlement on numerous mixed-use projects across many Southern California communities.

Mr. Soderbergh has worked with the White House Office of Science and Technology and the Department of Energy in launching PATH (the Partnership for Advanced Technology in Housing). Its goals are to promote sustainable design by reducing energy usage while being environmentally responsible in the development of energy efficient and affordable housing through advanced and alternate technologies.

Mr. Banvard is a founding principal of the firm and manages the daily activities of the firm. He is a recognized expert in the areas of landplanning, housing design and the creation of liveable communities. His work includes the design and management of over two hundred completed residential projects that have provided over sixty thousand homes for all segments of the market, including senior and affordable communities. To date, his projects have garnered over thirty design awards. In addition, Mr. Banvard has presented educational seminars to the building and design professions, and has served as an expert witness.

With 30 years of professional experience, Mr. Banvard brings an extensive background and insight into all phases of project design and delivery. He has worked directly with many agencies over the years. This familiarity with such a wide range of codes, interpretations, and procedures, ensures that each project he oversees encounters minimal difficulties and surprises.

He was awarded a Distinguished Alumnus Award from his alma mater in 2008.

A founding principal of the firm, Mr. Van Tilburg has led the organization into the forefront of planning and design, building on the solid reputation of his previous firm, Johannes Van Tilburg & Partners, established in 1971. His work as a designer is widely recognized throughout the state and indeed the entire country. In 1992 he was honored by his peers and elevated to Fellowship in the American Institute of Architects.

Mr. Van Tilburg is deeply committed to education in Los Angeles and continues to work as a ‘Visiting Lecturer’ in the architectural departments of USC, UCLA, Harvard University Graduate School of Design and the Southern California Institute of Architecture.

The primary goal of Van Tilburg, Banvard & Soderbergh (VTBS Architects) is to provide meaningful design solutions that effectively respond to the needs of our clients and the inhabitants of our buildings, while respecting the sensitive balance of community and the environment. The firm is widely acknowledged as a creative design firm with substantial technical abilities in designing a wide range of retail, commercial office and interiors, educational facilities, residential, retirement, masterplanning and mixed-use projects.

Van Tilburg, Banvard & Soderbergh (VTBS Architects) was founded in 1994 by Johannes Van Tilburg, FAIA, L. Gustaf Soderbergh, AIA, and Navy F. Banvard, AIA. The three founding Principals are formerly of Johannes Van Tilburg & Partners, a firm founded by Van Tilburg in 1971. Additional Principals within the firm, Lucia H. Chang, AIA, LEED AP, is the Senior Designer and William A. Nishita, AIA, is the Senior Technical Advisor. Dennis T. DiBiase, AIA, LEED AP and expert in the design of Senior Living communities was named Principal in 2013. The six Principals have worked together for over twenty-five years and represent cumulative architectural experience of more than 150 years. Each Principal contributes to VTBS Architects in diverse ways that form a broad foundation for the practice of architecture.

VTBS Architects has over 60 employees in California and Colorado. Within the organizational structure of the firm, the Principals rely heavily on a talented group of partners and associates in our Santa Monica headquarters, Denver and San Francisco offices.
